Mistletoe Bay/Te Mahia Saddle to Anakiwa
This last section follows old bridle paths above Onahau Bay, skirting some
farm paddocks and then passing through rapidly regenerating forest which
supports large populations of waxeyes, tomtits, finches, fantails and wekas.
The track goes into mature forest before descending into Bottle Bay. From
here the track sidles just above the sea to Davies (Umungata) Bay. It is
a pleasant and undulating walk.
Davies Bay has long been a popular picnic spot for locals. There is a nice
safe beach here, barbecue facilities, a Department of Conservation campsite
and toilets.
The last hour to Anakiwa again follows an old bridle path. A wide and easy
path, it runs through mature forest featuring large beech trees and is a
perfect conclusion to your Queen Charlotte experience.
At Anakiwa there is a shelter, a public card phone, toilet and car park.
Walkers catching water taxi services are collected from the first jetty
on your left at Anakiwa
Anakiwa
Anakiwa, "the cave of Kiwa", named after the chief of the substantial pa
which was once here, is the end of the track.
The Cobham Outward Bound School, established in 1962, welcomes visitors
to take a look through the information center which has a video on the programmes
available and interesting historical details on the school's 36-year operation.
Follow the signs at the gate opposite the jetty.
Shuttle bus or boat transport should be organized prior to arrival. Accommodation
options in the Anakiwa area include Anakiwa Backpackers, Anakiwa Lodge,
Smiths Farm Holiday Park, Taranui Bach@Anakiwa and Tirimoana House. See
