Where to start?

Anawkia or Ship Cove - Which Way is Best?

Although the Queen Charlotte Track can be walked from either end, the recommended start is at Ship Cove.
View Maps

  • Ship Cove is an Historic Reserve. There is no accommodation and camping is not permitted. No public telephone is available and cell phone coverage is extremely poor, therefore walkers requiring transport from Ship Cove will need to have definite and confirmed boat transport arrangements.

  • Freedom walkers starting from the Anakiwa end of the Queen Charlotte Track will usually have to carry their own packs. Boat operators who provide regular pack transfers normally provide this service for passengers walking from the Ship Cove end of the Track only. Alternative arrangements are usually available for larger groups.

Track News
Visitors may come across wild pigs from time to time along the track rooting for food, especially the section between Camp Bay and Torea Saddle, over the winter months.

These wild pigs are very shy and will run away from walkers, if walkers are lucky enough to spot one.

The pigs were released by Captain Cook at Ship Cove as a food source & have spread through out New Zealand. ....
